만일 이런 것들이 우리에게 사실이라면

빌립보서 2:1

1 그러므로 그리스도 안에 무슨 권면이나 사랑의 무슨 위로나 성령의 무슨 교제나 긍휼이나 자비가 있거든

오늘은 잠시 쉬었던 빌립보서 강해로 돌아가 빌립보서 2장 1절의 말씀을 함께 살펴보도록 하겠습니다. 

오늘 아침의 본문은 조건문, 즉 "너희가 만약…있거든"의 가정하에 시작한다는 점에 주목하시길 바랍니다.

“...그러므로 그리스도 안에 무슨 권면이나 사랑의 무슨 위로나 성령의 무슨 교제나 긍휼이나 자비가 있거든…” (빌2:1)

주 예수님 안에서 구원받은 모든 사람에게 적용되는 이러한 사실들이 여러분에게도 어느 정도 적용된다면, 다음과 같이 이렇게 행동하시길 바랍니다.

“...마음을 같이하여 같은 사랑을 가지고 뜻을 합하며 한마음을 품어…” (빌2:2)

다시 말해, 우리 중 누구라도 1절에서 말씀하고 있는 구원의 은혜라는 영적 축복을 누리고 있다면, 우리는 이 축복을 함께 나누는 모든 사람들과 영적인 연합을 유지할 수 있습니다. 미국 속담에 ‘같은 깃털을 가진 새들끼리 모인다’ ("초록동색/유유상종")라는 말처럼 말입니다. 1절 말씀이 우리에게 해당되는 것이라면, 우리는 주님의 보혈로 구원받은 모든 사람과 같은 깃털을 가진 것입니다. 고난과 적의가 가득한 이 악한 세상에 머물 때 우리는 동일하게 격려받을 수 있는 근원을 가지고 있습니다. 다양한 고난 속에서도 우리가 받을 수 있는 가장 큰 위로는 우리가 믿고 있는 동일한 진리에서 비롯됩니다. 세상의 모든 사람들 중에서 오직 우리만이 성령의 다양한 사역에 참여할 수 있습니다. 영적 죽음 안에 거하는 이 세상 안에서 우리들은 이방인들과도 같지만, 그리스도 안에 있는 참된 형제들에게는 서로가 낯선 사람이 아닙니다. 주님에 대한 우리의 공통된 믿음과 사랑이 우리를 그들과의 교제로 인도하기 때문입니다. 우리가 그리스도의 다른 성도들과 이러한 것들을 공유한다면, 우리는 그들과 참된 영적 연대를 누리게 되며, 따라서 가능한 한 그들과 연합하여 살아야 합니다. 이것이 우리 주님께서 그분의 성도들을 위해 나타내신 뜻이며, 언제나 그렇듯이 그분을 향한 우리의 사랑은 그분의 뜻을 향한 순종으로 우리를 이끄는 것입니다. "...그러므로 그리스도 안에 무슨 권면이나 사랑의 무슨 위로나 성령의 무슨 교제나 긍휼이나 자비가 있거든 마음을 같이하여 같은 사랑을 가지고 뜻을 합하며 한마음을 품어…”

먼저, 본문은 신자들이 그리스도 안에서 권면을 누린다고 말씀합니다. 

"...그러므로 그리스도 안에 무슨 권면이나 사랑의 무슨 위로나 성령의 무슨 교제나 긍휼이나 자비가 있거든… "(빌립보서 2:1).

모든 신자가 누리는 귀중한 축복 중 하나는 우리 주 예수님과의 연합입니다. 우리가 믿음으로 그리스도께로 돌이켰을 때 우리는 그분과 연합되었습니다. 그 이후로 우리는 이제 그리스도 안에 있는 것입니다. 신약 성경 전체에서 신자들은 "그리스도 안에" 있다고 표현됩니다. 우리가 믿지 않았을 때는 그리스도를 떠나 밖에 있었습니다. 그러나 구원받았을 때 우리는 그리스도 안에 있게 되었습니다. 사도 바울은 그의 동역자들 중 일부가 자신보다 먼저 "그리스도 안에" 있었다고 말합니다. "...내 친척이요 나와 함께 갇혔던 안드로니고와 유니아에게 문안하라 그들은 사도들에게 존중히 여겨지고 또한 나보다 먼저 그리스도 안에 있는 자라…"(로마서 16:7). 안드로니고와 유니아의 회심은 바울보다 먼저 일어났고, 그렇기 때문에 그들은 바울보다 먼저 "그리스도 안에" 있었습니다. 그리스도 안에 있다는 것의 중요한 측면 중 하나는 그리스도의 몸에 연합되는 특권입니다. 주 예수님을 진심으로 믿는 모든 사람으로 구성된 교회는 그리스도의 몸이라고 불립니다.

“...또 만물을 그의 발 아래에 복종하게 하시고 그를 만물 위에 교회의 머리로 삼으셨느니라 교회는 그의 몸이니 만물 안에서 만물을 충만하게 하시는 이의 충만함이니라…” (엡1:22-23)

그리스도의 몸의 지체가 된다는 것은 그리스도께서 이제 우리의 머리가 되셨다는 것을 의미합니다. 이는 머리가 몸의 여러 부분을 인도하는 것처럼 그분이 우리의 지도자(행 5:31)라는 것뿐만 아니라, 이제 우리가 그분께 없어서는 안 될 존재로 여겨진다는 것을 의미합니다. 에베소서 1장 23절에서 읽을 수 있듯이, 교회는 그리스도의 충만함입니다. 이것은 무슨 뜻일까요? 저는 이렇게 생각합니다. 그리스도의 몸을 구성하는 모든 구성원은 궁극적으로 그분에게 접붙여졌습니다. 왜냐하면 우리는 창조 전에(에베소서 1:4) 영원부터(디모데후서 1:9) 그분의 아들을 위해 구속받도록 아버지에 의해 선택되었기 때문입니다. 아버지께서 그분의 아들을 위해 선택하신 모든 영혼이 그분의 교회에 비로소 모였을 때 아들은 자신의 몸을 충만하고 완전하다고 여기실 것입니다. 즉, 우리가 그리스도 안에 있다면 우리는 그분께 없어서는 안 될 존재라는 것을 의미합니다. 우리는 그분의 충만함의 각 부분이며, 우리가 없다면 그분의 몸은 불완전할 것입니다. 우리가 그분의 몸의 지체이기 때문에 그리스도께서는 우리를 양육하시며 소중히 여기십니다. "...누구든지 언제나 자기 육체를 미워하지 않고 오직 양육하여 보호하기를 그리스도께서 교회에게 함과 같이 하나니 우리는 그 몸의 지체임이라…"(에베소서 5:29-30) 우리 주님께서는 우리가 구원에 이르도록 그분의 말씀을 먹이심으로써 우리를 양육하십니다. "갓난아기들 같이 순전하고 신령한 젖을 사모하라 이는 그로 말미암아 구원에 이르도록 자라게 하려 함이라"(베드로전서 2:2) 구원에 이르도록 자라는 것은 거룩함, 즉 우리 주님의 형상으로 자라나는 과정을 가리킵니다. 

"...오직 사랑 안에서 참된 것을 하여 범사에 그에게까지 자랄지라 그는 머리니 곧 그리스도라…"(에베소서 4:15) 

그리스도께서는 진리의 말씀을 가르침으로써 우리를 양육하시고 우리가 그분의 형상으로 자라도록 하십니다. 우리의 성장의 목표는 거룩함 안에서 그분과 같이 되는 것입니다.

그리스도께서는 자신의 몸의 각 지체를 양육하실 뿐만 아니라, 그 지체들을 소중히 여기십니다. 그분은 우리를 마치 거대한 기계 속의 별볼일없는 작은 톱니바퀴처럼 하찮게 여기지 않으십니다. 그분은 우리를 미워하지 않으시며 오히려 사랑하시고 소중히 여기십니다. 에베소서 5장에는 믿는 남편들이 아내에게 보여야 할 사랑에 대한 가르침이 있습니다. 남편들은 그리스도께서 교회를 사랑하신 것처럼 아내를 사랑해야 한다고 가르침을 받습니다. 남편들은 그리스도께서 자신의 몸을 사랑하신 것처럼 아내를 자신의 몸처럼 사랑해야 한다고 가르침을 받습니다. 세상에서 우리가 사랑하는 사람들 중에서 아마 ‘부모님’이 가장 먼저 떠오르실 것입니다. 하지만 성경에는 부모를 자신의 몸처럼 사랑하라는 말씀이 없습니다. 하지만 남편들은 아내를 자신의 몸처럼 사랑해야 한다고 가르침을 받습니다. 세상 모든 사람 중에서 아내에 대한 남편의 사랑은 다른 모든 사람을 능가해야 합니다. 그리고 그러한 사랑이 아무리 위대하더라도 남편의 사랑은 그리스도께서 자신의 몸의 각 지체를 사랑하신 사랑에 대한 작은 은유일 뿐입니다. 우리가 그리스도와 연합되었다면, 그분은 우리를 그분의 충만함의 필수적인 부분으로 보시며 소중히 여기십니다. 그분은 누구도 우리를 그분에게서 빼앗아 가지 못하게 하실 것입니다. 아무도 우리를 그분의 손에서 빼앗아 가지 못할 것입니다(요한복음 10:28). 어떤 사람도 (우리 자신을 포함하여), 심지어 마귀조차도 우리를 그분의 손아귀에서 빼앗아 갈 수 없습니다.

 "...내 양은 내 음성을 들으며 나는 그들을 알며 그들은 나를 따르느니라 내가 그들에게 영생을 주노니 영원히 멸망하지 아니할 것이요 또 그들을 내 손에서 빼앗을 자가 없느니라…"(요한복음 10:27-28).

그리스도 예수께서 베드로가 자신을 배신할 것을 예언하셨을 때, 그분은 또한 베드로를 위해 이렇게 기도하셨다고 말씀하셨습니다. 

“...시몬아, 시몬아, 보라 사탄이 너희를 밀 까부르듯 하려고 요구하였으나 그러나 내가 너를 위하여 네 믿음이 떨어지지 않기를 기도하였노니 너는 돌이킨 후에 네 형제를 굳게 하라…” (눅22:31-32)

주님께서 베드로를 위해 기도하신 것은 그의 믿음이 떨어지지 않게 해 달라는 것이었습니다. 시험의 순간에 자신을 부인하는 엄청난 죄에도 불구하고, 아버지께서 베드로의 믿음이 떨어지지 않도록 지켜 주시고 회개를 통해 그를 회복시켜 주시기를 기도하셨습니다. 부활하신 우리 주님은 지금 하나님 우편에 계시며 우리를 위해 중보하고 계십니다. 그리고 분명 주님은 우리를 위해 중보하시며 주님의  몸의 각 지체를 위해 같은 기도를 하고 계실 것입니다. 아무도 우리를 구원하신 그리스도에 대한 우리의 믿음을 완전히 소멸시킬 수 없습니다. 물론, 한때 그리스도를 믿는다고 거짓 주장했지만 그 후로 자신의 신앙고백을 저버리고 주님의 이름을 버린 사람들이 많습니다. 그들의 배교는 그들이 원래부터 그래왔다는 것을 드러낼 뿐입니다. 그들은 결코 주 예수 그리스도를 진정으로 신뢰하지 않았습니다. 그리고 처음부터 믿음에 대한 그들의 주장이 거짓이었기 때문에 그들은 결코 그리스도의 몸 안에 있지 않았던 것입니다. 물론, 많은 사람들이 그러하듯이, 그들은 거짓된 신앙고백을 하며 교회에 가입했을지도 모릅니다(요 15:2; 요 15:6). 그런 의미에서 그들은 그리스도와 일시적이고 외적인 관계를 맺고 있었습니다. 하지만 그들은 결코 진정으로 회심하지 않았고, 그리스도와 진정으로 연합하지도 않았으며, 그분의 보이지 않는 교회에 진정으로 연합하지도 않았습니다. 그리스도를 믿는다고 주장하지만 결국 신앙 고백에서 벗어나는 사람들에 대해 복음은 분명히 다음과 같이 선포하고 있습니다. 

“...그들이 우리에게서 나갔으나 우리에게 속하지 아니하였나니 만일 우리에게 속하였더라면 우리와 함께 거하였으려니와 그들이 나간 것은 다 우리에게 속하지 아니함을 나타내려 함이니라…” (요일2:19)

그러나 진실된 믿음으로 우리 주님의 몸과 영적으로 연합된 자들은 주님께서 그 분의 소유된 백성으로 소중히 여기시며, 결코 우리를 버리지 않으실 것입니다. 우리가 진실로 믿었던 첫날에 우리 안에서 선한 일을 시작하신 그분께서 우리 주님께서 다시 오시는 영광스러운 날에 그 일을 완성하실 것입니다.

“...너희 안에서 착한 일을 시작하신 이가 그리스도 예수의 날까지 이루실 줄을 우리는 확신하노라…” (빌1:6)

우리의 신뢰가 그리스도 안에 있다면, 우리는 그리스도 안에 있습니다. 우리는 그분과 연합되었고, 그분은 우리를 그분의 충만함의 일부로 양육하시며 소중히 여기십니다. 그분은 지금 이 순간에도 우리를 위해 중보하고 계시며, 우리를 위해 기도하시는 분은 바로 성자 하나님이시기에 우리는 그분의 기도가 언제나 효력이 있음을 압니다. 우리 주님께서 당신의 몸을 위해 중보하심으로 보게 될 결과는 무엇일까요? 로마서 8장은 우리에게 강력한 확신을 줍니다.

“...누가 정죄하리요 죽으실 뿐 아니라 다시 살아나신 이는 그리스도 예수시니 그는 하나님 우편에 계신 자요 우리를 위하여 간구하시는 자시니라 누가 우리를 그리스도의 사랑에서 끊으리요 환난이나 곤고나 박해나 기근이나 적신이나 위험이나 칼이랴 기록된 바 우리가 종일 주를 위하여 죽임을 당하게 되며 도살 당할 양 같이 여김을 받았나이다 함과 같으니라 그러나 이 모든 일에 우리를 사랑하시는 이로 말미암아 우리가 넉넉히 이기느니라 내가 확신하노니 사망이나 생명이나 천사들이나 권세자들이나 현재 일이나 장래 일이나 능력이나 높음이나 깊음이나 다른 어떤 피조물이라도 우리를 우리 주 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 하나님의 사랑에서 끊을 수 없으리라…” (롬8:34-39)

얼마나 큰 권면입니까! 얼마나 큰 사랑입니까! 

"...그러므로 그리스도 안에 무슨 권면이나 사랑의 무슨 위로나 성령의 무슨 교제나 긍휼이나 자비가 있거든…” (빌립보서 2:1) 

그리스도 안에 있는 모든 사람에게 해당되는 이 영광스러운 것들 중 어떠한 권면을 받으신 적이 있습니까? 우리 주님께서 그 분의 몸의 지체들을 향해 베푸시는 이 사랑으로 인해 어떤 권면을 받을 수 있을까요? 아니면 아무런 반응도 불러일으키지 못하고 있는 것은 아닙니까? 수십 년 동안 교회에 다녔는데, 오랜 시간이 흘렀음에도 불구하고 복음에 관한 이런 이야기들을 듣고 이렇게 생각한 적이 있지는 않습니까? "바울이라는 사람은 지금 무슨 말을 하는거지? 난 바울이나 다른 사도들을 전혀 좋아하지 않았어. 이 성경도 좋아하지 않았고, 오래전에 이해하려고 애썼을 뿐이지. 왜 이렇게 이상하고 지루한 책을 공부하고 싶어 하는지 정말 이해가 안 가. 이런 지루하고 견딜 수 없는 가르침과 교리 없이도 나는 충분히 괜찮은 사람이라고 생각해. 기도도 하고, 일요일에는 꼭 교회에 가고, 헌금도 하고, 할 수 있는 한 다른 사람들에게 관대하며 도움을 주려고 노력하고 있어. 그러니 결국 죽으면 더 나은 곳으로 갈 거라고 확신해. 영원에 대한 나의 생각은 오직 이것뿐이고, 아무도 내 마음을 바꿀수 없어." 복음에 대한 우리의 태도가 그런 것이라면, 우리는 예수 그리스도를 거부한 것이며, 영적 죽음 안에 거하는 불신자이고, 현재 그리스도의 몸 밖에, 그분의 나라 밖에, 영원한 생명의 약속 밖에 있는 사람입니다(고린도전서 2:14). 자기 기만에 빠지지 마십시오. 오랫동안 교회에 다녔고, 식사 때마다 찬송가를 부르고, 정기적으로 헌금을 드린다는 사실에 의존하지 마십시오. 이런 것들은 누구도 구원하지 못합니다! 그리스도인은 분명 이런 일들을 하지만, 천국에 들어갈 자격이 있다는 확신을 갖기 위해 하는 것이 아닙니다. 그리스도인은 복음을 믿고, 자신의 보혈로 그들을 죄에서 구속하신 주 예수님으로부터 권면과 위로를 받기 때문에 이러한 일들을 하는 것입니다. 결과적으로, 그는 주님의 구원의 은혜에 경의를 표하며 예배를 드리고, 주님 안에서 같은 생각을 가진 형제들과 교제하며, 그분을 아는 거룩한 지식 안에서 그들을 양육하기를 원합니다. 그리스도인은 복음을 마음으로 믿기 때문에 복음이 그에게 격려와 위로가 됩니다! 그리스도 안에서 우리가 받고 있는 권면이 있습니까? 그분의 사랑에서 오는 위로가 있습니까? 우리가 진심으로 복음을 믿는다면, 분명히 있을 것입니다.

더 나아가, 우리 본문은 그리스도를 진심으로 믿는 모든 신자는 성령의 은사를 받는다는 것을 일깨워 줍니다. 

“...그러므로 그리스도 안에 무슨 권면이나 사랑의 무슨 위로나 성령의 무슨 교제나 긍휼이나 자비가 있거든…”(빌립보서 2:1) 

성령이 신자들 안에서 무엇을 이루는지에 대해 여러 번 말씀드렸기 때문에 지금은 이것에 대해 길게 이야기하지 않겠습니다. 성령께서 주 예수 그리스도를 진심으로 믿는 모든 구성원의 삶에서 특정한 일들을 이루신다고만 말해두겠습니다. 성령의 역사로 모든 진정한 신자는 구원 안에서 하나님 말씀의 계시를 받아들이고 이해할 수 있고(고린도전서 1:18; 22-24; 2:14-16) 예수 그리스도에 관한 근본적인 진리를 고백합니다(요한일서 4:2). 성령의 역사로 모든 참된 신자는 하나님의 말씀을 신성한 권위로 받아들입니다(요일 4:6; 데살로니가전서 2:13). 성령의 역사로 모든 참된 신자는 거듭납니다(요 3:5). 그리스도 예수를 믿고(요일 5:1), 하나님을 사랑하고(롬 8:14-15; 요일 4:7; 요일 5:1), 하나님께로부터 난 모든 사람을 사랑하는(요일 3:14; 요일 4:7; 요일 5:1) 새 피조물이 됩니다. 성령의 역사로 모든 신자는 그리스도의 형상을 따라 거룩하게 됩니다(고후 3:17-18; 갈라디아서 5:22). 성령의 역사로 모든 믿는 자에게는 그리스도의 몸을 섬기기 위한 다양한 은사가 주어집니다(고린도전서 12:11; 로마서 12:4-8; 베드로전서 4:10-11). 진정한 신자들 사이에 조금의 차이가 있더라도, 이러한 사실들은 모두에게 해당될 것입니다. 그리고 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 모든 진정한 신자들 안에서 성령의 이러한 공통적인 역사로 인해 그들은 서로 영적 연합을 누릴 수 있습니다. 그렇기 때문에 그리스도의 몸의 영적 연합을 "성령의 연합"(에베소서 4:2)이라고 부릅니다. 그리스도 안에 있는 모든 사람에게 공통적인 성령의 역사로 인해 그들은 서로 영적 연합을 누릴 수 있습니다. 그러므로 우리 자신을 살펴보도록 합시다. 우리에게 성령 안의 교제가 있습니까? 성령의 이러한 다양한 역사가 우리 안에서 분명하게 나타납니까? 우리가 진심으로 복음을 믿는다면, 그리스도를 진정으로 믿는 모든 사람이 성령으로 인치심을 받았기 때문에 이 모든 것들이 우리 삶에 어느 정도는 나타날 것입니다. 일부만이 아닙니다. 특별한 부류의 슈퍼 크리스천만이 아닙니다. 모든 신자들에게 말입니다.

“...그 안에서 너희도 진리의 말씀 곧 너희의 구원의 복음을 듣고 그 안에서 또한 믿어 약속의 성령으로 인치심을 받았으니 이는 우리 기업의 보증이 되사 그 얻으신 것을 속량하시고 그의 영광을 찬송하게 하려 하심이라…” (엡1:13-14)

마지막으로, 본문은 그리스도를 믿는 모든 참된 신자는 그리스도 안에 있는 동료 형제들을 사랑해야 함을 일깨워 줍니다. 

“...그러므로 그리스도 안에 무슨 권면이나 사랑의 무슨 위로나 성령의 무슨 교제나 긍휼이나 자비가 있거든…”(빌립보서 2:1). 

그리스도를 믿는 모든 참된 신자가 서로에게 갖는 사랑에 대해 성경은 이렇게 말씀하고 있습니다. 

“...사랑하는 자들아 내가 새 계명을 너희에게 쓰는 것이 아니라 너희가 처음부터 가진 옛 계명이니 이 옛 계명은 너희가 들은 바 말씀이거니와 다시 내가 너희에게 새 계명을 쓰노니 그에게와 너희에게도 참된 것이라 이는 어둠이 지나가고 참빛이 벌써 비침이니라…” (요일2:7-8)

그리스도께 참되고 그분을 아는 모든 사람에게 참된 새 계명인 이 옛 계명은 무엇입니까? 바로 그리스도의 제자들이 서로 사랑하라는 계명입니다.

“...새 계명을 너희에게 주노니 서로 사랑하라 내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라

너희가 서로 사랑하면 이로써 모든 사람이 너희가 내 제자인 줄 알리라…” (요13:34-35)

어떤 의미에서 이 계명은 오래된 것입니다.이웃을 사랑하라는 명령은 구약의 율법으로 거슬러 올라가기 때문입니다.이 계명이 또한 새 계명인 이유는 그리스도께서 자신의 몸의 지체들을 사랑하신 데서 예시된 것과 관련이 있습니다.“…내가 너희를 사랑한 것 같이 너희도 서로 사랑하라.”(요한복음 13:34) 주님께서 자신의 몸에 대해 가지신 사랑은 그분의 몸에 연합된 모든 사람에게 적용됩니다. 그리스도를 진심으로 믿는 모든 사람의 마음에는 주 예수 그리스도를 진실로 신뢰하고 사랑하는 사람들 가운데 있을 때 누리는 교제가 있습니다.주 예수님의 이름을 믿는 사람들(요한복음 1:12), 그분께 순종하고 기쁘시게 하려는 마음을 가진 사람들(히브리서 10:15-17), 그리고 그분의 말씀을 경외하고 존중하는 사람들(데살로니가전서 2:13) 가운데 있는 것은 더 이상 이상하고 특이한 사람들 가운데 있는 것이 아닙니다. 가장 깊은 차원에서 우리와 동일함을 가지고 있는 사람들 가운데 오는 것입니다. 그것은 우리의 동족 가운데 있는 것이며, 복음의 구원의 은혜로 변화된 그리스도의 나라의 동료 시민이자 성도들 가운데 있는 것입니다.

주님의 은혜로 구원받은 모든 사람 안에 거하시는 성령의 능력으로, 주님께서 제자들을 향한 사랑이 우리 안에서도 재현되고 있습니까? 우리가 진정으로 믿음으로 그리스도께로 돌아와 그분의 피로 구속받고 그분의 몸과 연합되었다면, 분명 그렇게 될 것입니다.

“...우리는 형제를 사랑함으로 사망에서 옮겨 생명으로 들어간 줄을 알거니와 사랑하지 아니하는 자는 사망에 머물러 있느니라…” (요일3:14)

If These Things Are True of Us 

Philippians 2:1

1 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 

I would like to remind everyone that we are continuing with our series in Philippians, picking up where we left off in the second chapter of this epistle, moving on to verse 1. 

You'll notice that our text for this morning opens with a conditional statement – a big “if” statement. 

1 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, (Philippians 2:1)

If these things that are true of all who are saved in the Lord Jesus are true of you to any extent, then do the following: 

2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. (Philippians 2:2) 

In other words, if any of us enjoy the spiritual blessings of saving grace as they are touched upon here in verse 1, then we are able to maintain spiritual unity with all who share in these same blessings. As they say, “Birds of the feather, flock together.” If verse 1 is true of us, we are of the same feather as all who are redeemed by the precious blood of our Lord. We share the same source of encouragement when our sojourn in this present evil world fraught with hardship and opposition. Our greatest comfort amid our various sufferings is derived from the same truth. We alone, out of all the people of the world, are privy to participate in the Spirit's various ministries. Though we are strangers to a world that abides in spiritual death, we are not strangers to our true brethren in Christ because our shared faith and love for the Lord brings us into fellowship with them. If we share in these things with the rest of Christ's saints, then we enjoy true spiritual solidarity with them and so ought to dwell in unity together with them, as far as it is possible. This is the revealed will of our Lord for His saints and as always, our love for Him compels our obedience to His will. “So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.” (Philippians 2:1–2) 

First off, our text tells us that believers enjoy encouragement in Christ. “So if there is any encouragement in Christ,” (Philippains 2:1) One of the invaluable blessings that all believers enjoy is union with our Lord Jesus. At the time we turned to Christ in faith we were united to Him. Henceforth, we are now in Christ. All throughout the New Testament, believers are said to be “in Christ”. We were once outside of Christ when we were unbelieving. But at salvation, we were brought into Christ. Thus, the apostle Paul tells us that some of His fellow workers were “in Christ” before him. “Greet Andronicus and Junia, my kinsmen and my fellow prisoners. They are well known to the apostles, and they were in Christ before me.” (Romans 16:7) The conversion of Andronicus and Junia preceded his own and that is why they were “in Christ” before him. One major aspect of being in Christ is the privilege of being joined to Christ's own body. The church, consisting of all who have genuinely believed in the Lord Jesus, is referred to as Christ's body: 

22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. (Ephesians 1:22-23) 

To be a member of Christ's body means that Christ is now our Head. This not only means that He is our Leader (Acts 5:31) much as our own head leads the various parts of our body, but it also means we are considered indispensable to Him. The church, we read in Ephesians 1:23, is Christ's fullness. What does that mean? I think it means this: each and every constituent member of Christ's body has been engrafted into Him ultimately because we were chosen by the Father to be redeemed for His Son, before creation (Ephesians 1:4), from all eternity (2 Timothy 1:9). Only until each and every soul that the Father has chosen for His Son is gathered into His church, will the Son regard His body to be full and complete. That would mean if we are in Christ, we are indispensable to Him. We are each apart of His fullness without whom His body would be incomplete. Because we are members of His body, Christ nourishes us and cherishes us. “For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body.” (Ephesians 5:29-30) Our Lord nourishes us by feeding us His word that we might grow up into salvation. “Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation—“ (1 Peter 2:2) Growing up into salvation refers to our progress in sanctification – our growth into the likeness of our Lord. “Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,” (Ephesians 4:15) It is through the teaching of the word of truth that Christ nourishes us so that we may grow up into His likeness. The objective of our growth is to become like Him in holiness. 

Not only does Christ nourish each member of His own body but He cherishes each member of His body as well. He does not regard us a dime a dozen – a replaceable little cog in a giant machine. Never does He hate us but loves us and cherishes us. The context of that passage in Ephesians 5 is instruction concerning the love believing husbands must show their wives. Husbands are taught to love their wives as Christ loved the church. Husbands are taught to love their wives as their own bodies even as Christ loves His own body. Out of all the people we love in the world, our parents are probably at the top of the list. And yet, we are never told in scripture to love our parents as our own bodies. But husbands are taught in scripture to love their wives as their own bodies. Of all the people in the world, a man's love for his wife ought to surpass all others. And that kind of love, as great as it is, is only a faint metaphor for Christ's love for each member of His own body. If we have been united to Christ, He cherishes us as an indispensable part of His fullness. He will not permit anyone to snatch us away from Him. No one will snatch us out of His hand (John 10:28) - no person (including ourselves), not even the devil himself can succeed in wresting us from His grasp. “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.” (John 10:27-28)

When Christ Jesus foretold Peter's betrayal of Him, He also disclosed what He had prayed on behalf of his disciple: 

31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, 32 but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” (Luke 22:31-32) 

Our Lord's prayer for Peter was that his faith would not fail. He prayed that despite the monumental sin of denying Him at the moment of testing, His Father would keep Peter's faith from failing and restore him through repentance. Our risen Lord is presently at the right hand of God, interceding for us. And surely He is praying the same thing for each member of His body as He intercedes on our behalf. No one can totally extinguish our faith in Christ through which we are saved. There are, of course, many who once falsely claimed to have faith in Christ who have since reneged on their profession and forsaken the name of the Lord. In their case, their apostasy only exposed what was true of them all along: they never did genuinely trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. And because their claim to faith was spurious from the beginning, they never were in the body of Christ. True, they may have been admitted into the visible church (John 15:2; John 15:6) with a pretended profession of faith, as so many do. In that sense, they were in a temporary, external relationship with Christ. But they were never truly converted, never truly united to Christ and truly joined to His invisible church. As the gospel plainly declares concerning such people who claim to believe in Christ only to eventually fall away from their profession: 

“They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.” (1 John 2:19) 

But as for those who truly believe and are spiritually united to the body of our Lord, He cherishes us as His own and He will never let us go. He who began a good work in us on that first day we truly believed will bring it to completion on that glorious day when our Lord returns: 

6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:6)

If our trust is in Christ, we are in Christ. We have been united to Him and He nourishes us and cherishes us as a part of His own fullness. He is interceding for us at the present time and because it is God the Son who prays for us, we know His prayers are always effective. What is the outcome of our Lord's intercession on behalf of His body? Romans 8 reminds us with powerful certitude: 

“34...Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written,

“For your sake we are being killed all the day long;

we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:34-39) 

What encouragement! What love! “So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love...” (Philippians 2:1) Is there any encouragement derived from these glorious things that are true of all who are in Christ? Is there any comfort from this love which our Lord has for the members of His body? Or do these things fail to evoke a response? Have we been attending church for so many decades and yet, after all this time, hear these things pertaining to the gospel and think, “What is this fellow, Paul, talking about? You know, I never liked this man, Paul or any of the other apostles for that matter. I never liked this bible and gave up long ago trying to make sense of it. I really do not understand why anyone would want to study this strange, tedious book. I think I am a decent enough person without all of its dull, insufferable teachings and doctrines. I say my prayers. I make sure to go to church on Sundays. I give offering. I try to be generous and helpful to others when I can. So, when all is said and done, I am certain I'll go on to a better place when I die. And that is all I care to think on the matter of eternity and no one can convince me otherwise.” If that is our attitude towards the gospel, we have rejected Jesus Christ, we abide in spiritual death, we are an unbeliever, and we are presently outside of Christ's body, outside of His Kingdom, and outside of the promises of eternal life (1 Corinthians 2:14). Do not be self-deceived. Do not rely on the fact that we have attended church for a long time and we recite grace over our meals and give offering regularly. These things do not save anyone! A Christian does these things, for sure, but not as a way to assure themselves that they are decent enough to get into heaven. A Christian does these things because he or she believes the gospel and is encouraged and comforted by the Lord Jesus who has redeemed them from their sins by His own precious blood. Consequently, he desires to give the Lord homage and worship for His saving grace and enjoy fellowship with his like-minded brethren in the Lord and build them up in the sanctifying knowledge of Him. A Christian believes the gospel from the heart and it is therefore encouragement and comfort to him! Is there any encouragement in Christ for us? Is there any comfort from His love? If we truly believe the gospel from the heart, there most certainly will be. 

Furthermore, our text reminds us that every genuine believer in Christ receives the gift of the Holy Spirit. “So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit,” (Philippians 2:2) We have at various times in the recent past, talked about what the Holy Spirit accomplishes within believers so we will not go at length talking about it now. Suffice it to say that the Holy Spirit accomplishes certain things in the lives of each and every constituent person who truly believes in the Lord Jesus Christ. By the work of the Holy Spirit, all genuine believers are able to accept and understand the revelation of God's word in a saving manner (1 Corinthians 1:18; 1 Corinthians 1:22-24; 1 Corinthians 2:14-16)  and confesses the fundamental truths concerning Jesus Christ (1 John 4:2). By the work of the Holy Spirit, all genuine believers receive God's word as divinely authoritative (1 John 4:6; 1 Thessalonians 2:13). By the work of the Holy Spirit, all genuine believers are born again (John 3:5) as new creations who believe in Christ Jesus (1 John 5:1), love God (Romans 8:14-15; 1 John 4:7; 1 John 5:1), and love all who are born of God  (1 John 3:14; 1 John 4:7; 1 John 5:1). By the work of the Holy Spirit, all believers are being sanctified after the image of Christ (2 Corinthians 3:17-18; Galatians 5:22). By the work of the Holy Spirit, all believers are given various gifts to serve the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:11; Romans 12:4-8;1 Peter 4:10-11). Whatever differences there may be among genuine believers, these things will be true of them all. And it is because of these common operations of the Holy Spirit within each and every genuine believer in Christ Jesus that they are able to enjoy spiritual unity with each other. That is why the spiritual unity of Christ's body is called “the unity of the Spirit” (Ephesians 4:2). It is because of the work of the Holy Spirit that is common to all who are in Christ that they are able to enjoy spiritual unity with each other. So, let us examine ourselves. Do we enjoy any participation in the Holy Spirit? Are these various works of the Holy Spirit evident within ourselves? If we truly believe the gospel from the heart, there will be at least some manifestation of all these things in our lives since all who genuinely trust in Christ are sealed with the Holy Spirit. Not just some. Not just a special class of super Christians. All. “In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.” (Ephesians 1:13-14) 

Finally, our text reminds us that every genuine believer in Christ loves their fellow brethren in Christ. 1 “So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy,” (Philippians 2:1) Concerning the love all genuine believers in Christ have for each other, we read elsewhere in scripture: 

7 Beloved, I am writing you no new commandment, but an old commandment that you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word that you have heard. 8 At the same time, it is a new commandment that I am writing to you, which is true in him and in you, because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. (1 John 2:7-8) 

What is this old commandment which is at the same time a new commandment that is true of Christ and true of all who know Him savingly? It is the commandment for Christ's disciples to love one another:

34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35)

In one sense, this commandment is old because the command to love one's neighbor goes all the way back to the law of the Old Testament. The newness of the commandment has to do with its depth which was exemplified in Christ's love for the members of His own body. “...just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” (John 13:34) Something of the Lord's love for His own body is true of all who have been joined to His body. In the heart of every genuine believer in Christ is a sense of fellowship when they are among those who truly trust and love the Lord Jesus Christ. To be among people who believe in the name of the Lord Jesus (John 1:12), who have a heart to obey and please Him (Hebrews 10:15-17), and who revere and honor His word (1 Thessalonians 2:13) is no longer to be among strange and unusual people. It is to come among a people who are, at the deepest level, like ourselves. It is to be among our own people – fellow citizens and saints of Christ's kingdom who have been transformed by the saving grace of the gospel. 

Is something of the Lord's love for His disciples reproduced in us by the power of His Spirit who lives within all who are saved by His grace? If we have truly turned to Christ in faith and have been redeemed by His blood and united to His body, there will be.

“We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death.” (1 John 3:14)
