사랑받는 형제, 신실한 일꾼, 주 안에서 함께 종이 된 자

골로새서 4:7-8

7 두기고가 내 사정을 다 너희에게 알려 주리니 그는 사랑 받는 형제요 신실한 일꾼이요 주 안에서 함께 종이 된 자니라 8 내가 그를 특별히 너희에게 보내는 것은 너희로 우리 사정을 알게 하고 너희 마음을 위로하게 하려 함이라

계속해서 골로새서 강해를 진행하고 있는 가운데 오늘 우리가 함께 살펴볼 하나님의 말씀은 골로새서 4장 7절에서 8절까지의 말씀입니다. 

여러분께서도 기억하시겠지만 이제 우리는 골로새 교회를 향한 바울의 마지막 지시 사항에 대한 공부를 마쳤습니다. 오늘부터는 이 서신의 마지막 부분, 즉 바울의 동역자들을 통하여 골로새 교회에 전달한 인사말을 살펴보기 시작할 것입니다. 성경 서신들의 마지막 인사말 부분은 그냥 얼버무리고 싶은 유혹이 있기도 합니다. 우리는 베드로, 요한, 바울, 바나바, 디모데와 같은 유명 인물이 아니라 우리에게 잘 알려지지 않은 그리스어 이름들을 읽게 됩니다. 우리는 이러한 세부적인 내용에는 별로 관심이 없기 때문에 얼른 서신의 끝 부분으로 넘어가고 싶어합니다. 이들 이름 중 상당수가 신약성서의 다른 인물들만큼 유명하지 않은 것이 사실이지만, 복음 전파와 하나님 나라를 위해 중요한 역할을 수행했던, 우리에게 덜 알려진 그리스도의 종들을 주의 깊게 고려함으로 배울 수 있는 귀중한 지침들이 있습니다.

바울이 골로새인들에게 보낸 문안에 언급된 첫 번째 이름은 두기고라는 사람입니다. 두기고는 누구입니까? 우리는 사도행전 20장에서 바울과 함께 예루살렘으로 항해하던 일곱 사람 가운데서 그의 이름을 처음으로 듣게 됩니다. 사도행전에 대해 잘 알고 계시다면, 바울이 예루살렘에서 체포되고 결국 죄수로서 로마로 보내졌다는 것을 기억하실 것입니다. 그리고 바울이 로마에 투옥되어 있는 동안 골로새서에 편지를 쓴 것이라고 널리 알려져 있습니다. 오늘 본문을 보면 두기고가 바울의 사자로 골로새 교회에 파송된 것을 볼 수 있습니다.

“...두기고가 내 사정을 다 너희에게 알려 주리니 그는 사랑 받는 형제요 신실한 일꾼이요 주 안에서 함께 종이 된 자니라 내가 그를 특별히 너희에게 보내는 것은 너희로 우리 사정을 알게 하고 너희 마음을 위로하게 하려 함이라 신실하고 사랑을 받는 형제 오네시모를 함께 보내노니 그는 너희에게서 온 사람이라 그들이 여기 일을 다 너희에게 알려 주리라…” (골4:7-9)

따라서 두기고는 바울과 함께 로마까지 동행했으며 사도의 메신저로서 섬기고 있었던 것으로 보입니다. 바울이 에베소서에 보낸 서신(아마도 골로새서와 비슷한 시기에 기록되었을 것입니다)의 결론 부분에는 두기고가 바울의 사자 역할을 했다고 언급되어 있습니다(엡 6:21-22). 그 당시 로마에서 골로새까지의 여행은 천 마일이 넘는 길고 힘든 여행이었습니다. 바울이 두기고를 자신의 귀중한 서신서를 전달해주고 그를 대표해줄 수 있는 사람으로 신뢰했다는 사실은 그가 교회를 섬기는 일에 있어서 신실했으며 주님께 신실했음을 말해줍니다. 

바울은 생애 말년에 로마에서 두 번째로 더 가혹한 투옥을 당하고 교회에서 많은 사람들에게 버림받았지만 두기고는 여전히 바울의 메신지로 섬기고 있었던 것으로 보입니다(딤후 4:12). 두기고는 우리가 말씀을 통해 본 것처럼 오늘 본문에 기록된 바울의 말과 일치하는 사람이었습니다. “...그는 사랑 받는 형제요 신실한 일꾼이요 주 안에서 함께 종이 된 자니라…” (골 4:7)

먼저 사도 바울은 두기고가 “사랑받는 형제”라고 단언했습니다. 바울은 두기고를 사랑받는 형제라고 부름으로써 이 사람의 믿음이 진실하고 그가 하나님의 권속이며 동료 형제로 여기고 있음을 보증한 것입니다. 두기고는 검증된 믿음을 가지고 있었습니다. 그는 그저 한 두해 동안 그리스도와 그분의 복음을 믿었던 자가 아닙니다. 그는 그리스도를 믿는다고 공언했다가 심각한 박해를 받게 되자 얼른 그 분을 부인했던 사람도 아닙니다. 그의 개인 생활에 대해서는 많이 알지 못하지만, 바울이 두기고를 “사랑하는 형제”라고 단언한 사실은 주 예수 그리스도에 대한 그의 믿음이 견고하고 굳건했음을 증거합니다. 그러므로 우리는 두기고의 이러한 입증된 믿음을 통해 사람의 마음에 구원받는 믿음이 진정으로 존재한다면 인생의 모든 시련의 시험을 견딜 수 있다는 사실을 상기하게 됩니다. 그리스도 예수를 진정으로 신뢰하는 모든 사람들은 “... 말세에 나타내기로 예비하신 구원을 얻기 위하여 믿음으로 말미암아 하나님의 능력으로 보호하심을 받은” 사람들입니다. (벧전 1:5) 우리가 진정으로 그리스도를 신뢰한다면, 마지막 때에 드러나게 될 우리의 영광스러운 숙명을 위해 우리를 지켜주시는 것은 다름 아닌 ‘하나님의 능력’이십니다. 우리들에게 약속된 영원한 기업을  위해 하나님의 능력은 우리를 정확히 어떻게 보호해 주십니까? 우리는 베드로전서 1장 5절에서 “믿음으로 말미암아”라는 말씀을 읽습니다. 하나님께서는 그분의 능력으로 힘을 받고 있는 우리의 믿음을 통해 우리를 영원한 기업으로 안전하게 인도하십니다. 많은 사람들이 그리스도를 믿는다고 주장하지만 시험의 때에 그분을 부인합니다. 그들은 그리스도를 믿는다고 공언했지만 결코 그리스도를 믿는 믿음을 갖지 못했습니다. 우리는 믿음의 고백으로 구원을 받는 것이 아니라 믿음을 소유함으로써 구원을 받습니다. 구원받는 믿음은 그냥 왔다가 사라지는 것이 아니라 엄청난 것입니다. 그것은 하나님께서 그의 능력으로 유지해주시는 하나님의 선물(엡 2:8)입니다. 그리고 우리의 믿음을 지탱해 주는 것이 하나님의 능력이라면 그 믿음은 끝까지 지속될 것임을 우리는 압니다. 그래서 사도 요한은 구원받는 믿음을 다음과 같이 설명했습니다. 

“...무릇 하나님께로부터 난 자마다 세상을 이기느니라 세상을 이기는 승리는 이것이니 우리의 믿음이니라 예수께서 하나님의 아들이심을 믿는 자가 아니면 세상을 이기는 자가 누구냐…” (요일 5:4-5)

“하나님께로 난 몇몇 사람”이 아니라 “하나님께로부터 난 자마다”라고 말씀하고 있습니다. 모든 사람, 즉 성령으로 거듭나 참으로 그리스도를 믿는 모든 사람들은 세상을 이깁니다. 어떻게 세상을 이깁니까? “...세상을 이기는 승리는 이것이니 우리의 믿음이니라…” (요일 5:4) 세상을 이기는 승리는 그리스도 예수를 믿는 우리의 믿음입니다. 참되고 거듭난 믿음은 세상이 이길 수 없습니다. 결과적으로 믿음으로 받게 된 구원은 상실될 수 없는 것입니다. R.C. 스프로울 목사님은 이 점에 대해 이렇게 표현합니다. "...당신이 구원받는 믿음을 가지고 있다면 결코 그것을 잃지 않을 것이며, 그것을 잃어버렸다면 당신은 처음부터 구원받는 믿음이 없었던 것입니다." (R.C. 스프로울, 기독교 신앙의 필수 진리)

한때 예수 그리스도에 대한 믿음을 가지고 있다고 주장했던 지인, 친구, 가족들이 주님께 등을 돌리고 그분의 말씀을 비웃는 것을 볼 때 우리는 마음이 아프고 낙담하며 소외감을 느낄 수 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 우리의 믿음을 지켜주시는 하나님의 능력을 경험하고 그 어느 때보다 우리 마음 깊은 곳으로부터 그리스도 예수를 신뢰하려는 마음이 있다는 것을 알게 될 때, 비록 우리의 믿음이 시험을 당할지라도, 때로는 극심한 시련을 겪을지라도 우리는 그 시험을 견디어 냅니다. 그리고 사도 베드로가 우리에게 가르쳐주는 것처럼, 연단받은 믿음은 우리에게 확신을 주며 금보다 더 귀한 것입니다.

“...그러므로 너희가 이제 여러 가지 시험으로 말미암아 잠깐 근심하게 되지 않을 수 없으나 오히려 크게 기뻐하는도다 너희 믿음의 확실함은 불로 연단하여도 없어질 금보다 더 귀하여 예수 그리스도께서 나타나실 때에 칭찬과 영광과 존귀를 얻게 할 것이니라…” (벧전1:6-7)

두기고는 바울에 의해 하나님의 가족의 사랑하는 형제라는 확증을 받았습니다. 더욱이 바울은 골로새 교회에 두기고가 “신실한 일꾼”임을 확증해 주었습니다. 두기고는 하나님으로부터 청지기 직분을 받아 그 직분을 충실히 수행한 사람이었습니다.. 바울 자신도 자신의 사역을 하나님의 청지기직으로 여겼습니다.

“...나는 이제 너희를 위하여 받는 괴로움을 기뻐하고 그리스도의 남은 고난을 그의 몸된 교회를 위하여 내 육체에 채우노라 내가 교회의 일꾼 된 것은 하나님이 너희를 위하여 내게 주신 직분을 따라 하나님의 말씀을 이루려 함이니라…” (골1:24-25)

복음을 전파하는 의무는 하나님께서 바울에게 주신 청지기직이었습니다. 이것은 그가 몇 번 하다가 기분 좋게 그만둘 수 있는 자원 봉사 활동이 아니었습니다. 궁극적으로 바울은  개인적으로 느끼는 성취감으로 보람을 위해 복음을 전파한 것이 아니라 그리스도께서 그에게 복음을 전파하라고 명하셨기 때문에 복음을 전파했습니다.

“...하나님의 종이요 예수 그리스도의 사도인 나 바울이 사도 된 것은 하나님이 택하신 자들의 믿음과 경건함에 속한 진리의 지식과 영생의 소망을 위함이라 이 영생은 거짓이 없으신 하나님이 영원 전부터 약속하신 것인데 자기 때에 자기의 말씀을 전도로 나타내셨으니 이 전도는 우리 구주 하나님이 명하신 대로 내게 맡기신 것이라…” (딛1:1-3)

주님은 바울에게 그분의 복음을 전파하는 의무를 담당하라고 명하셨습니다. 바울은 자신의 사도직이 선택의 문제가 아니라는 것을 이해했습니다. 그가 원하든 원하지 않든 그는 하나님으로부터 청지기직을 받았습니다. 자신의 청지기 직분을 수행하지 않는 것은 주님의 명령을 거역하는 것이 됩니다. 이 사실로 인해 바울은 “내가 복음을 전하지 아니하면 내게 화가 있을 것이로다”라고 선언했습니다. (고전 9:16-17) “...내가 복음을 전할지라도 자랑할 것이 없음은 내가 부득불 할 일임이라 만일 복음을 전하지 아니하면 내게 화가 있을 것이로다 내가 내 자의로 이것을 행하면 상을 얻으려니와 내가 자의로 아니한다 할지라도 나는 사명을 받았노라…” (고전 9:16-17) 바울은 만일 자신이 이 청지기 직분을 충실하게 수행하는 것을 거부한다면 하나님의 불쾌하심과 그 분의 심판을 불러일으킬 것임을 이해했습니다. 우리가 믿는 자라면 우리 역시 하나님으로부터 청지기 직분을 받습니다.

“...각각 은사를 받은 대로 하나님의 여러 가지 은혜를 맡은 선한 청지기 같이 서로 봉사하라 만일 누가 말하려면 하나님의 말씀을 하는 것 같이 하고 누가 봉사하려면 하나님이 공급하시는 힘으로 하는 것 같이 하라 이는 범사에 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님이 영광을 받으시게 하려 함이니 그에게 영광과 권능이 세세에 무궁하도록 있느니라 아멘…” (벧전 4:10-11)

우리가 그리스도 안에 있다면, 우리 각 사람은 그리스도의 몸을 섬기는 일에 사용해야할 은사를 하나님께 받았습니다. 때때로 우리가 잘 알고 있듯이 청지기 직분은 힘들고, 어렵게 느껴지고, 인정받지 못한 기분이 들거나  감사하지 않게 될 때가 있습니다. 우리의 섬김이 당연하게 여겨질 수 있습니다. 때때로 우리는 교회에 가치 있고 필요한, 지루하고 반복적인 일을 하는 데 많은 시간을 쏟아부어야 할 때가 있습니다. 때로는 우리가 기울이는 노력으로 인해 동료 형제들로부터 무례한 비난을 받기도 합니다. 이러한 이유로 우리는 그리스도의 몸을 섬기는 청지기 직분을 그냥 버리거나 우리의 청지기 직분을 마음을 다해 수행하고 싶지 않은 유혹을 받을 수도 있습니다. 우리는 우리의 청지기 직분이 눈에 띄지 않거나 인식되지 않는 것처럼 보이기 때문에 그 일을 계속 수행하는 것이 무의미하다고 느낄 수도 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 그리스도의 몸을 섬기는 일의 청지기가 되어야 할 이유가 있습니다. 그 이유는 우리에게 은사를 맡기신 분이 바로 하나님이시기 때문입니다. 바울처럼 우리의 청지기 직분은 그리스도의 몸을 위하여 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 것입니다. 우리가 하나님으로부터 받은 청지기 직분을 무시하거나 저버릴 때, 우리는 신실하지 않은 사역자가 되는 것입니다. 주님을 향한 우리의 청지기 직분에 충성하지 않는 것은 의심할 바 없이 그분을 불쾌하게 합니다. 그러므로 두기고와 바울처럼 우리도 그리스도의 몸의 신실한 일꾼이 되도록 노력합시다. 하나님께서 우리에게 맡기신 일이 크든 작든, 하나님을 섬기는 일에 충성하여 그리스도의 교회를 꾸준히 섬깁시다. 

마지막으로, 사도 바울은 두기고를 “주 안에서 함께 종이 된 자”로 여겼습니다. 원어로 “함께 종이 된 자”로 번역된 단어는 ‘sundoulos 쉰둘로스’인데 ‘sun’(함께)와 ‘doulos’(종)의 합성어입니다. 둘로스는 골로새서 3장 22절에서 “종”으로 번역된 단어와 동일합니다. “...종들아 모든 일에 육신의 상전들에게 순종하되…”(골3:22) 바울과 두기고는 둘 다 그리스도의 종으로서 그 분께서 자신들의 주인이심을 알았습니다.  그들은 자신들의 만족을 위해 사역자로서 일하지 않았습니다. 그들의 궁극적인 관심은 그들의 주인이신 예수 그리스도를 섬기고 순종하는 것이었습니다. 일부 그리스도인들은 즐겁고 흥미롭고 다른 사람들의 박수와 존경을 보상으로 받을 경우에만 주님을 섬기기를 원합니다. 그리고 그 일이 힘들고, 사람들이 고마워하지 않고, 고통스러워지는 순간, 그들은 그것을 포기하고 더 쉬운 곳으로 이동하고 싶어합니다. 고대시대에 종이 자기 주인에게 “저는 그 일이 즐겁고 보람 있고 다른 사람들이 인정해줄 때만 당신을 위해 일하겠습니다.”라고 말한다고 상상해 보십시오. 서신의 사자로서 주님을 섬기는 일은 위험하고, 힘들고, 매력 없는 일이었습니다. 바울은 당시 장거리 여행의 어려움을 다음과 같이 설명합니다.

“...세 번 태장으로 맞고 한 번 돌로 맞고 세 번 파선하고 일 주야를 깊은 바다에서 지냈으며 여러 번 여행하면서 강의 위험과 강도의 위험과 동족의 위험과 이방인의 위험과 시내의 위험과 광야의 위험과 바다의 위험과 거짓 형제 중의 위험을 당하고 또 수고하며 애쓰고 여러 번 자지 못하고 주리며 목마르고 여러 번 굶고 춥고 헐벗었노라…” (고후11:25-27)

두기고는 바울과 함께 주님을 위한 일을 하면서 이러한 극심한 고난을 기꺼이 견뎌냈습니다. 왜냐하면 자신을 위한 일이 아니었기 때문입니다. 그는 그의 주인이신 주 예수 그리스도를 섬기고 있었습니다. 그러므로 바울과 두기고와 같은 사람들이 그리스도를 섬기면서 겪은 고난의 일부를 접할 때, 우리들 또한 어떠한 사람들인지 기억합시다. 우리는 우리보다 앞서 믿음의 길을 간 형제 바울과 두기고, 그리고 수많은 다른 사람들과 함께 주 안에서 종된 자들입니다. 우리들도 소매를 걷어붙이고, 이를 악물고, 어려움과 맞서면서 주님께서 우리에게 맡기신 일을 합시다.

오늘 본문 마지막 구절의 말씀처럼, 바울은 골로새에 그의 사자로 보낼 뿐만 아니라 그 도시에 있는 그리스도의 몸을 격려할 목적으로 두기고를 보냈습니다. “...내가 그를 특별히 너희에게 보내는 것은 너희로 우리 사정을 알게 하고 너희 마음을 위로하게 하려 함이라…” (골 4:8) 우리도 그리스도를 신실하게 섬길 때 그분의 교회를 섬기며 이 세상에서 함께 그 분의 종된 자들로서 서로를 격려해야 합니다. 우리는 주님을 위해 수고하는 형제들을 위해 얼마나 자주 기도합니까? 실제로 그들을 위해 기도하고 있음을 얼마나 자주 그들에게 알려줍니까? 우리는 형제들이 그리스도와 그분의 교회를 섬기는 것에 대해 하나님께 감사한다고 얼마나 자주 서로에게 말해줍니까? 우리가 믿음 안에 있는 형제들과 함께 생활할 때 바울이 데살로니가 교회에 보내는 권면과 같은 말을 서로에게 해주고 있습니까?

“...우리가 너희 모두로 말미암아 항상 하나님께 감사하며 기도할 때에 너희를 기억함은

너희의 믿음의 역사와 사랑의 수고와 우리 주 예수 그리스도에 대한 소망의 인내를 우리 하나님 아버지 앞에서 끊임없이 기억함이니…” (살전1:2-3)

골로새 성도들의 마음을 격려하기 위해 바울이 두기고를 보냈던 것처럼, 형제 여러분, 우리도 같은 방법으로 서로를 격려해야 함을 기억하십시오.

Beloved Brother, Faithful Minister, Fellow Servant

Colossians 4:7-8

7 Tychicus will tell you all about my activities. He is a beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord. 8 I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are and that he may encourage your hearts, 

I would like to remind everyone that we are continuing our series in Colossians picking up where we left off last week in the fourth chapter of this epistle, moving on to verse 7 – 9. 

Previously, if you remember, we concluded our study of Paul's final set of instructions to the Colossian church. Today, we will begin considering the last section of this epistle which consists of greetings from Paul's fellow workers in ministry conveyed through him to the church at Colossae. There is a temptation to just gloss over the greetings sections of the epistles of scripture. We see all these Greek names who are not well known to us in comparison to more famous figures such as Peter, John, Paul, Barnabas, or Timothy. We're not very interested in the finer details of bible trivia so we want to just rush on to the end of the epistle. While it is true that many of these names are not as famous as other individuals of the New Testament, there is still valuable instructions to be learned when we carefully consider these lesser-known servants of Christ, who also filled important roles for the advancement of the gospel and God's kingdom. 

The first name mentioned in Paul's greetings to the Colossians is this individual named, Tychicus. Who is Tychicus? Well, we encounter his name first in Acts 20, among seven men who accompanied Paul in his voyage to Jerusalem. If we are familiar with the book of Acts, we would know that it was at Jerusalem where Paul would be arrested and eventually be sent as a prisoner to Rome. And it is widely thought that it was during his imprisonment in Rome Paul wrote his epistle to the Colossians. In today's text, we can see that Tychicus was sent to the church at Colossae as a messenger from Paul: 

7 Tychicus will tell you all about my activities. He is a beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord. 8 I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are and that he may encourage your hearts, (Colossians 4:7-9) 

So, it appears that Tychicus accompanied Paul all the way to Rome and was serving as a messenger for the apostle. At the conclusion of Paul's epistle to the Ephesians (which was probably written around the same time that Colossians was written), Tychicus is also mentioned there filling the role of a messenger for Paul (Ephesians 6:21-22). The journey from Rome to Colossae during that time would have been long and difficult, covering over a thousand miles. The fact that Paul trusted Tychicus to deliver his precious epistles and represent him to the churches speaks for his reliability in service to the church and his faithfulness to the Lord. 

Later, towards the end of Paul's life as he languished in a second, more severe imprisonment at Rome and abandoned by many in the church, it appears that Tychicus was still serving as a messenger for Paul (2 Timothy 4:12). Tychicus, from what we can see in scripture, was true to Paul's testimony of his character as given in our text for today: “He is a beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord.” (Colossians 4:7) 

First of all, the apostle Paul affirmed that Tychicus was “a beloved brother”. By calling Tychicus a beloved brother, Paul was vouching for the sincerity of this man's faith and his regard for him as a fellow brother of the family of God. The faith of Tychicus was tried and tested. He didn't dabble with Christ and His gospel for a season or two. He didn't profess faith in Christ only to repudiate Him at the first whiff of serious persecution. Though we do not know much about his personal life, the fact that Paul affirms Tychicus as “a beloved brother” testifies to the stability and steadfastness of his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. And so, we are reminded through the tested and proven faith of Tychicus that wherever saving faith truly exists in a person's heart, it stands the test of all of life's trials. Those who truly trust in Christ Jesus are those “...who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” (1 Peter 1:5) If our trust is genuinely in Christ, it is nothing less than God's power that is guarding us for our glorified destiny that will be revealed in the last time. But how exactly does God's power guard us for our promised eternal inheritance? “through faith”, we read in 1 Peter 1:5. God brings us safely to our eternal inheritance through our faith sustained by His power. Many people claim to trust in Christ but repudiate Him in the time of testing. They professed faith in Christ but never possessed faith in Christ. We are not saved through a profession of faith but through the possession of faith. True, saving faith is a tremendous thing that doesn't just come and go like so many phases people go through. It is a gift of God (Ephesians 2:8) which He sustains by His power. And we know that if it is God's power that upholds our faith, it will endure until the end. That is why the apostle John describes saving faith in the following way: 

4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? (1 John 5:4-5) 

Everyone who has been born of God, not some who have been born of God. Everyone - every constituent person who is born again by the Spirit and truly converted unto Christ - overcomes the world. How do they overcome the world? “And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” (1 John 5:4) The victory that has overcome the world is our faith in Christ Jesus. True, regenerated faith cannot be overcome by the world. Consequently, salvation, once appropriated by faith, cannot be lost. As R.C. Sproul puts it so memorably, “...if you have saving faith you will never lose it, and if you lost it, you never had it.” (R.C. Sproul, Essential Truths of the Christian Faith) 

As we see acquaintances, friends, and family, who once falsely claimed faith in Jesus Christ, turn their backs on the Lord and ridicule His word, we may feel hurt, discouraged, and marginalized. But as we experience the power of God preserving our faith, and as we find that more than ever, we are inclined to trust in Christ Jesus from the bottom of our hearts, let us rejoice in the fact that though our faith is being tested, even at times with grievous trials, it is withstanding the test. And a tested faith, as the apostle Peter teaches us, is more precious than gold for the sake of our assurance: 

6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 1:6-7) 

Tychicus was affirmed by Paul as a beloved brother of God's family. Furthermore, Paul affirmed to the Colossian church that Tychicus was a “faithful minister”. Here was a man who had a stewardship from God and carried it out faithfully. Paul himself regarded his ministry as a stewardship from God: 

24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church, 25 of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, (Colossians 1:24-25) 

Paul's responsibility to preach the gospel was a stewardship from God. This wasn't volunteer work he could drop at a whim. Ultimately, Paul preached the gospel not because he found it fulfilling and personally rewarding but because Christ commanded him to preach the gospel. 

1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, 2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began 3 and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior; (Titus 1:1-3)

The Lord commanded Paul to steward the preaching of His gospel. Paul understood that his apostolic ministry was not a matter of choice. Whether he wanted to do it or not, he was entrusted by God with a stewardship. Failure to carry out his stewardship would be defying the command of the Lord. In light of this fact, Paul declared, “Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!” (1 Corinthians 9:16-17) “16 For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward, but if not of my own will, I am still entrusted with a stewardship.” (1 Corinthians 9:16-17) Paul understood that a refusal to carry out his stewardship faithfully would provoke the displeasure and judgment of God. If we are believers, we too have a stewardship from God: 

10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. (1 Peter 4:10-11) 

If we are in Christ, each of us have received a gift from God which we are to steward in service to Christ's body. Sometimes, our stewardship can be unpleasant, difficult, unrecognized, or unappreciated, as some of us may know so well. Our service may be taken for granted. Sometimes we need to pour in many hours into doing tedious, repetitive tasks which are nonetheless, valuable and necessary for the church. Sometimes our good efforts are met with ungracious criticism from our fellow brothers. For reasons like these, we may be tempted to just drop our stewardship in service to Christ's body or carry out our stewardship halfheartedly. We may feel that since our stewardship seems unnoticed or unappreciated, it is pointless to continue carrying it out. But there is a reason to keep stewarding our gift in service to Christ's body and that reason is God who has entrusted us with our gift. Like Paul, our stewardship is from God given to us for the body of Christ. When we neglect or abandon our stewardship from God, we are being unfaithful ministers. No doubt to be unfaithful in our stewardship to the Lord displeases Him. So, let us, like Tychicus and Paul, make sure we are being faithful ministers to Christ's body. Whether our God-given tasks are great or small, extensive or minor, let us be faithful in our stewardship to God, persevering in our service to Christ's church. 

Finally, the apostle Paul regarded Tychicus as a “fellow servant in the Lord”. In the original language, the word translated as “fellow servant” is sundoulos which is compound of sun (together with) and doulos (slave). Doulos is the same word translated as “bondservant” in Colossians 3:22: “Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters,” (Colossians 3:22) Both Paul and Tychicus understood that as bondservants of Christ, Jesus was their heavenly Master. They did not labor as ministers for the sake of their own gratification. Their ultimate concern was to serve and obey their Master, Jesus Christ. Some Christians only want do work for the Lord if it is enjoyable and interesting and is rewarded with the applause and admiration of others. And the moment the work becomes hard, thankless, and painful, they want to give it up and move on to easier pastures. Imagine a bondservant in those ancient times saying to his or her master, “I'll only do work for you for as long as it is enjoyable and fulfilling and recognized by others.” Serving the Lord as a courier to the churches was dangerous, difficult, and unglamorous work. Paul gives us a glimpse of the hardships of long distance travel back in his day: 

25 Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; 26 on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; 27 in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. (2 Corinthians 11:25-27) 

Along with Paul, Tychicus willingly endured these extreme kinds of hardships in his work for the Lord because he was not in it for himself. He was serving his Master and Lord Jesus Christ. So, when we encounter a fraction of the kind of suffering men like Paul and Tychicus endured in service to Christ, let us also remember who we are: fellow bondservants in the Lord, along with our brothers Paul and Tychicus and countless others who have gone before us in the faith. And let us roll up our sleeves, grit our teeth, face the challenges head on, and do the work the Lord has given us to do. 

As we read in the final verse of today's text, Paul sent Tychicus to Colossae not only as his messenger but also for the purpose of encouraging the body of Christ in that city. “I have sent him to you for this very purpose, that you may know how we are and that he may encourage your hearts,” (Colossians 4:8) We also ought to be encouraging each other as we seek to faithfully serve Christ as ministers unto His church and as His bondservants in this world. How often do we pray for our brethren in their labors for the Lord? How often do we let them know we are in fact praying for them? How often do we tell our brethren that we are thankful to God for their service to Christ and His church? Is there anything of Paul's encouragement to the church of the Thessalonians in our own interactions with our brethren in the faith? 

“We give thanks to God always for all of you, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Thessalonians 1:2-3) 

As Tychicus was sent by Paul to encourage the hearts of the Colossian believers, so also brethren, let us remember to encourage one another in the same way.
